I recently watched the movie “Minimalism” and it definitely struck a chord. In fact, after watching it I cleaned out my entire closet and donated six full trash bags of clothing. It got me thinking about how I could do more with my wardrobe with less clothes! Take the look below for example. The same basic pieces, accessorized differently.
|Tee: Gap | Jeans: Asos | Jacket: Similar | Shades: Revolve| Shoes: Shoe Dazzle|
|Tee: Gap | Jeans: Asos | Jacket: StyleWe | Shades: RayBan| Shoes: Valentinos|
In the movie “Minimalism” it touched base on the fact that as humans we are inclined to always want more, have more, do more. What was interesting to learn from this was that the majority of these material goods bring us little to no lasting happiness.
This is why I want to take a minute to encourage you all to think about your wardrobe and what you love most in it! Capitalize on those pieces and be mindful of them when you’re shopping for more.
For me, I love the basics and I love dressing them up with my accessories. For example jeans and a tee can make for a million and one looks depending on how you accessorize it. I love transitioning a look with a fun jacket, statement jewels or a pretty purse.
This year I plan to make an effort to work the basics of my wardrobe and accessorize them to change the look. I am going to actually try the whole “Less is More” thing (At least relative to what I am doing now!!) I am not by any means saying I am done shopping and am going full on minimalist (Hence the pink tennis shoes and Valentinos!) BUT I am just going to be more cognizant of my purchases and the actual value they bring to me. I want to make sure they are authentic to my style and will be worn more than once.
- Watch the Minimalism and get an understanding of what fulfills you!
- Start by making 4 piles! I love. Not Sure. Trash. Donations.
- The I love pile is for what’s really working! Donations, are the pieces that aren’t working these are going straight to donations! Not Sure, the pieces to revisit and ask yourself the questions below before deciding if you keep them or not. Trash- You feel guilty even donating it to someone else. (There are more of these than you think!)
- Ask yourself if you “Would I buy this today?” “Do I have plans to wear this soon?” If the answer is no. Donate it. The more you get rid of the better you feel!
- As you are cleaning ASK yourself “Does this serve me?” Meaning, does it bring you any emotional value, are you excited to wear it, is it tied to a special memory..ect, ect? You’ll be surprised how little is actually serving you! Like that PJ top from 5th grade? Not so much.
